PS6: Sony aims to innovate gameplay without abandoning tradition

Sony has officially confirmed that PlayStation 6 is a key element of its future strategy. During a recent investor meeting, Hideaki Nishino, the newly appointed CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, described the next-gen console as a “top priority” for the company. The aim is to reimagine how players engage with content and services, blending innovation with the core principles of the traditional PlayStation experience.

The upcoming PS6 is being designed to fit into a more advanced and integrated technological and financial ecosystem. The console’s chipset will be developed in collaboration with AMD, and backward compatibility will be a major focus to ensure an easy transition for existing players.

At the same time, Sony emphasizes the strength of its cross-platform ecosystem. With PS5, PS4, and PC forming a vast and active gaming environment, the company now counts more than 124 million monthly active users. This seamless generational continuity has helped Sony stabilize its revenue model, moving away from the sharp ups and downs typical of console cycles. Instead, the firm now benefits from a steady stream of recurring revenue through subscriptions and microtransactions, which together make up over two-thirds of total income.
